Probiotics – Why you should love these guys!

First, let’s dissect the word probiotic.  It means pro-life.  Just as antibiotic means anti-life.

Your body, specifically your gut, should be full of pro-life bacteria or probiotics.  A healthy gut has TRILLIONS of these beneficial critters.  The ratio of good bacteria to bad bacteria in your body should be approximately 85% good guys to 15% bad guys.  That way the good guys always win.

Unfortunately, one round of antibiotics can wipe out that ratio.  Antibiotics do not discriminate – they kill the bad stuff along with all the good stuff.   So does an unhealthy diet.

Why probiotics are a good idea:

  1. Probiotics keep your immune system strong.  Approximately 70% of your immune system resides in your gut!
  2. A healthy ratio of good bacteria protects you from invading microorganisms that can cause disease.  Think of probiotics as your good gut soldiers keeping the enemy at bay.
  3. Probiotics help you digest food, absorb nutrients, and clear toxins.
  4. And, if you are overweight, probiotics can help with fat loss!

Eat probiotic rich foods such as high quality yogurt, kefir, fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and miso.  Consider supplementation, especially if you’ve been on antibiotics or your diet is lacking.

P.S. If you choose to supplement, look for products that list several strains of good bacteria i.e. strains of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium and that these products offer billions of live cultures.   25 to 100 billion is not a bad start.    Afterall, you want your good gut soldiers to number in the trillions!
