Bread, pasta, muffins – friend or foe?

It’s pretty well understood that too much sugar is a bad thing.  But what many people don’t realize is that too much flour is also a bad thing.  Flour = sugar.

Just as eating too much sugary candy, cookies, and ice cream is not good for you, neither is eating too much bread, muffins, bagels, pasta, crackers (anything made with flour as its main ingredient).

These foods are examples of overly refined, overly processed carbohydrates.

First, understand that carbohyrates are essential to the diet.   We must eat them.  Carbohydrates break down into glucose (sugar).   Glucose is essential to every cell in the body BUT you can “overdose” your body’s need for glucose.  This can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis….the list is long and it’s not good.

The carbohydrates your body prefers that you eat are:  veggies (lots of them), whole fruits (not juice), legumes (beans, lentils), whole grains (left intact – not pulverized into flour), nuts and seeds (preferably raw).  These carbohydrates provide your body with the glucose you need but at a slow and steady pace.

When you eat overly processed, refined carbohydrates it’s like mainlining sugar (glucose).  Your body can not process all that glucose at once so it stores what it can’t use as fat.  Is that what you want?

Your body has a simple request – it just wants to be nourished.   Make the right choices.
