Victory for supplements – for now.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill) tried to get one by us.  Twice he’s tried to get the FDA to regulate the supplement industry.  Once with a bill – that failed.  Then he tried to sneak it into an appropriations bill and that failed yesterday.  He will try again.

Regardless of which side of the political fence you’re on, we do not need the FDA regulating the supplement industry.  They can’t even regulate themselves very well.  There have been thousands and thousands of deaths from FDA approved pharmaceutical drugs but no deaths from supplement use.   The supplement industry has an excellent safety record.

It should never ever come to a point that we need a prescription for natural supplements.   Nor should the pharmaceutical companies be allowed to patent gifts from nautre – but they’re trying.  The supplement industry (the self care industry) is growing by leaps and bounds and the pharmaceutcal companies would love to tap into that income stream.

It is widely assumed that Senator Durbin will keep on trying to get a bill passed.   This is one of those times when contacting your state’s elected officials is important – let them know you disapprove.  For more info and a link to contact your representatives go to Alliance for Natural Health:
