A Protein Shake – My Recipe

I’m drinking a protein shake as I type.  Thought I’d share my recipe.  Why?

Because the word protein in Greek means “of primary importance”.

Proteins are the building blocks of the body.

Here are just a few reasons why we need protein:

  • To build muscle (the more muscle you have the more fat you burn)
  • To make antibodies in order to keep our immune system strong
  • Hormones (the body’s messengers) are made of protein
  • Enzymes that help us digest our food are made from protein
  • Neurotransmitters:  brain chemicals that effect mood, energy, alertness – made of protein
  • For our hair, skin, nails, eyes.   Collagen for firm, youthful skin is made of protein
  • Blood, which carries oxygen and nutrients to every cell in our body, is made from protein
  • Protein keeps blood sugar in balance and energy levels up
  • Protein is very filling and helps decrease our desire for sugar and refined flour goods such as pastries, cookies, bread, muffins, pasta, bagels, etc.

Having some protein with every meal and snack helps keep cravings away and hunger at bay.

Here’s my recipe:  everything goes in a blender

  • Whey protein powder  (I like the chocolate flavored powders, but there are other flavors to choose from)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp nut butter (almond, peanut, cashew, etc)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup of frozen berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or a mix of berries)
  • 8-12 oz water

Blend and drink within 30 minutes.
