Diet Drinks: Drinker Beware. Stroke risk 43% higher!

Let’s start with the bottom line:  don’t drink diet drinks and don’t drink regular sodas or overly sweetened drinks.  Drink water!

But if you had to choose between a diet soda or a regular soda, choose regular.  The sugar and calories, while excessive, are less damaging than the Frankenstein sweeteners in diet drinks.

Second bottom line:  avoid them both.   They provide ZERO value and lots of downside.

If the beverage you are about to consume uses the word “diet” go immediately to the ingredient list.  You won’t find sugar but you will find chemicals.  Health damaging chemicals.

A recent study shows a correlation between diet drink consumption and stroke.   “This study suggests that diet soda is not an optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened beverages, and may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, or vascular death than regular soda.”

Diet drinks are also associated with obesity.  Why?  Because the Frankenstein sweeteners are so much sweeter in taste than regular sugar they keep you addicted to the taste of sweets.  Sugar is addictive.  Fake sugar even more so.

A study by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, presented at the 2011 meeting of the American Diabetes Association, followed 474 diet soda drinkers for nearly 10 years. They found that their waists grew 70 percent larger than the waists of non-diet soda drinkers. Furthermore, those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a 500 percent greater increase in waist size!

Final bottom line:  Mother Nature has provided us with a wonderfully healing, absolutley necessary, refreshing beverage.

It’s called H2O – it’s the real thing!

For a hint of sweet, a splash of 100% juice or a squeeze of lemon works great.
